Calculation of Emissivity from NDVI

Recommended Posts

i,m working on my project which is about : monitoring urban heat islands with landsat TM images.when i want to calculate emissivity from the equation given by Van de Griend and Owe (1993),i can,t done it perfectly.i examine it in many of softwares such as: ilwis, erdas imagine 2011,ArcGIS10.1 but i could not set all of the conditions:

if ndvi< -0.185 emissivity=0.995

if ndvi>= -0.185 and ndvi<0.157 emissivity=0.970

if ndvi>=0.157 and ndvi<=0.727 emissivity= 1.0098+0.047*ln(ndvi)

if ndvi>0.727 emissivity=0.990

in ArcGIS 10.1/spatial analyst/con i performed bu i could not done it

i would be so tankful if you help me to solve my problem.

I used the Sobrino (2004; 2008) equation for calculating emissivity, using Model Maker in ERDAS.

You can find this in the folder that I gived you. (the link above).

Here is another article that uses the Sobrino method for emissivity (pg. 23):

Try ENVI's SPEAR Vegetation Delineation > Density Slicing tool

i,m so thankful for your response guys

i solve m problem with spatial modeler in erdas imagine

i want to calculate land surface temperature with this formula: LST = brightness temperature / 1 + (11.5 + brightness temperature /0.01438) * ln(emissivity)

i have brightness temperature(Tb) file and i calculate emissivity but i can,t calculate LST

i,ll be so thankful about your response and attention

the best regard

I don't understand your formula.

Where did you found that ?

I know 3 methods for LST calculation  using Landsat thermal images:

1. the mono-window algorithm developed by Qin http://www.bgu.ac.il/bidr/research/phys/remote/Papers/2001-Qin_Mono_Window_IJRS_01.pdf

2. the Sobrino algorithm, by Sobrino et al. ftp://atmosfera.cl/pub/elias/Paula/2004_Sobrino_RSE.pdf

3. the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE)  http://www.uv.es/ucg/articulos/2005/Publications_2004_10.pdf and http://people.eri.ucsb.edu/~dozier/Pubs/WanDozierIEEE1989.pdf

So, what is your method ?

So, what is your method ?

I wanted to use Qin 2001 method to retrieval LST but i could not calculating its parameters

the method of sobrino 2004 was not done since we face to lake of some atmospheric datas then i studied the paper of Qihao Weng(2004) "Estimation of land surface temperature–vegetation abundance relationship for urban heat island studies " which is published in Estimation of land surface temperature–vegetation abundance relationship

for urban heat island studies.I decided to use the method that was been used in that paper.here you can see this paper : http://www.utsa.edu/lrsg/Teaching/EES5053_Geo4093/Labs/Wengetal.pdf

dear all,

i have question about alghorithm Qin (LST)

Qin use 6s Model Correction for band 3 and band 4 to get ndvi --> emmisivity

how use 6s model? and what software to process it?

Thanks

I don't know how Qin used the 6S correction to extract the emissivity, but you can find other methos for emissivity.

Examples: Sobrino method, Van de Griend and Owe, Valor and Caselles, etc...

here, the article about this:

Thanks Arhanghelul for your question and link journal...

Btw i forgot said about 6s model. it is atmospheric correction method for process band 3 n 4 before extract emissivity (in jurnal Qin, he use sobrino method for extract emissivity)...

I know, for example, that there is an Atmospheric Correction Parameter Calculator web-tool developed by Barsi, for Single Thermal Band Instruments ( Landsat images)

You can find more informations about this tool, here:

http://atmcorr.gsfc.nasa.gov/

Other Atmospheric correction tools are incorporated in software packages, such as : ENVI ( FLAASH module), PCI Geomatica (ATMCOR), etc, etc.....

here a tutorial video:

Hi,

You all have forgotten another method based on LULC classification where each land use type is given a specific emissivity>>> NDVI method does not work in all conditions.

Yes, is true. But it has also a problem: you need to know the emissivity values for the LULC.

I found some articles about this method. Some researchers used the MODIS emissivity values for LULC classes to estimate the LST.
