welcome mate.

if you want to pick gis software, first time, what the most familiar software for you and decide you want the commercial or the open source ones

Arcgis is standart de facto of GIS Software, many many many people use this, but if you prefer the open source, so GRASS+QGIS are the best since their wide community.

but also there are many alternative out there, and all depend on your need, GIS has many functionality, from only map making, analyzing, remote sensing, etc. and each of that have their special software

like said Lurker rcgis is standart de facto of GIS Software, and i think that is a very suite of GIS very complete but is usefull for you take a little tour of open source of GIS.
