Yes, you can install ArcGIS for Desktop and Server on the same machine and run it both at the same time. Just keep your eyes out for the RAM, as ArcGIS for Server going to eat up  a chunk of memory.  Below is the link to some tutorial for ArcGIS for Server and building Web applications.  Good luck!

Hi PROBERT,

 

Of course, you can install both of them on the same machine.

Now depending of your host machine specification (Processor, Core, RAM and HHD size) you can also virtualized a Server like Windows 2008 and then install ArcGIS Server inside.

For my personal testing environment, I have installed one machine with ArcGIS Server, a second for my Geo Database and than a third one for the cache.
