how to calculate strom surge return period

Shortcut P= 1/t where t is the time period (i.e. 2yr, 10yr, 25yr, 50yr, and 100yr), p is the probability of an accident to be occurred.

sorry its not clear to me....................return period i need more clarification.......give me a clear example......it would help me a lot ..........suppose i have time series data of strom surge at a particular station,,,,,,,,,,,,,,now how do i get the return period value of strom surge
