Deriving LST from Landsat Data TM/ETM

Dear All,

 

Am trying to derive the land surface temperature of an area within the tropix in a bid to detect Urban Heat Island. Am proposing a time series to detect if at all it is existing. My biggest problem lies with deriving of the emissitivity where i have used formulars that have been advanced before but cant get values within the range, Anyone with a clear tutorial on how to derive LST using Envi or Erdas will be very helpful.

For the Emissivity:

I used the NDVI threshold method to derive the emissivity, developed bt Sobrino et al. (2004; 2008) and adapted to my study area (land cover/land use classes)

For the Land Surface Temperature (LST):

 

I used the Radiative Transfer Equation - RTE (Berk et al. 1989) and the Atmospheric Correction Parameter Calculator (ACPC) to facilitate calculation for the atmospheric transmission, upwelling and downwelling radiances, with uncertaiuies in the inferred surface temperatures by approximately ±2-3 Kelvin degrees (Barsi et al. 2005) http://landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov/atm_corr/

 

Then, based on the formulaes, I extracted the Emissivity and the LST using the Model Maker in ERDAS.

 

P.S: there is no method that can offer you a precise emissivity, 100%. The methods only offer an estimation for the emissivity and finally, for the LST.

Dear achoknyz,

 

The first, if you want to detect Land surface temperature, you need to use band Thermal Infrared image (Landsat, aster)...

If you use Landsat image, you use Envi software to process. You need realize steps:

 

Step 1: Convert from digital number Values (DN) to spectral radiance values

Step 2: Calculate value spectral radiance to temperature value

Here, you can see a model of LST estimation using ERDAS :

This is a simple model, assuming that Emissivity is uniform (=1) and no atmospheric correction is done (no corrections for atmospheric transmission, upwelling and downwelling radiances). So, if you apply this example, you can obtain a relative LST, witch is not the real-ground LST, but is very used in most literature.

nice , i did using the Lansat Band6 but i just it till to kelvin degree ...in envi have the it like sad poorbaby...pls share a napshot of your results.

I have written a Windows package called LSTools. You can download for free here:

(Bottom of list of Windows apps)

It scans the text file accompanying Landsat data downloaded from GLOVIS and compiles the expressions to generate reflectance, radiance and temperature. You can just copy and paste into ArcGIS, QGIS or Erdas Imagine. It knows the constants and derives the correct solar zenith angle etc.

Can we use your application as an extention for arcmap or Envi or even stand alone app?

It is already a standalone app. You install it like any Windows software and it creates an icon for you.

Hi,

Thank you for your information...I think if we can make a complate your app and make it an stand alone aplication which do process on its own without need to use erdas or envi,it could be down using gdal and dotspatial
