from their blog, firefox said that next firefox will using Google’s MapsGL for delivering 3d Map via firefox browser

WebGL was originally pioneered in Mozilla’s Canvas 3D project and introduced in Firefox earlier this year. This technology is a web standard implemented widely in browsers and allows websites to display hardware-accelerated 3D graphics without the need for third-party software.

Google announced MapsGL today, a version of Google Maps that allows users to experience 3D Maps with WebGL. MapsGL enables users to have a richer Google Maps experience with smoother imagery transitions, more fluid panning and zooming and 3D buildings.

MapsGL is an opt-in experience that is available in Firefox Beta and Chrome 14+.

What is Google WebGL,

WebGL is a new technology that brings hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the browser without additional installed software. With WebGL your maps experience is much better with 3D buildings, smoother transitions between imagery and the ability to instantly “swoop” into Street View without a plugin.
