Shades can be drawn in photoshop by hand, through various blending techniques and by using the Geographic Image extension by Avenza. Actually, hand shading in photoshop will always produce superior artistic results as there is much more control over the process.

A new masterpiece from Greenpeace : http://www.intothearctic.gp/

The map is not tiled, it's a whopping PNG of 1950 x 2455 pixels :

http://wac.7ce6.edgecastcdn.net/807CE6/intothearctic_gp/assets/images/mainMap.jpg (maybe the URL changes)

There's only one javascript for everything (apart from a browser detection and a bugtracker script) so i guess everything is written from scratch and doesn't depend on some other libraries, unfortunately the code has been minified.

It's worth a look.
